NetHope Academy Internship Program Haiti
The NetHope Academy Haiti – a six-month program that provides Haitian computer science students with both classroom and on-the-job IT skills training – is the first known program of its kind in the Haitian capital city. APPLY NOW!
In 2010 NetHope Academy successfully launched its intern program in Haiti -six months after the devastating earthquake decimated most of the island’s infrastructure. March 2011 NetHope held a graduation ceremony in Port-au-Prince for 39 Haitian IT students graduating from its inaugural NetHope Academy class. Over 80% of students graduating from the program were in full-time IT positions by July, 2011.
Through classroom education and internship placements with international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), the NetHope Academy prepares students for full-time careers in the IT field while allowing them to directly participate in the reconstruction of their communities. Host organizations include NetHope members World Vision, Save the Children, Concern, Mercy Corps, International Rescue Committee, Canadian Red Cross, CHF International, Habitat for Humanity, Oxfam GB and Catholic Relief Services. Other host organizations include World Health Organization, World Food Programme, Haiti Technology Group, Multilink and Access Haiti. Nearly 300 students applied for 39 coveted spots.
The rebuilding of Haiti will be accelerated and enhanced by the appropriate use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in health, education, economic development and government services. At present, there are not enough qualified IT professionals to support ICT related interventions. At the same time, it is difficult for young, talented Haitians to find work in the ICT field. Many computer science students and graduates are unemployable because they lack the work experience that employers demand.
Through the NetHope Academy ICT Skills Capacity Building Intern Program, university students and recent graduates are given the opportunity to gain significant IT skills that will allow them to directly participate in the reconstruction of their communities and increase their economic opportunities. During the course of this internship, candidates will work in the IT departments for participating humanitarian organizations and private sector companies.
Program highlights include:
- six month internship program for Haitian computer science and engineering students/graduates that provides real world “on the job” training along with focused classroom and self study learning opportunities. Preference for underserved populations including women, rural community natives and severely disadvantaged.
- Internships will be geared towards the following job roles – desktop support, network administration and telecommunications
- Participating organizations will (1) increase capacity of their IT departments and (2) contribute to the development of IT labor pool in Haiti
