What are the responsibilities of a Telecom Specialist?

Telecommunications Specialists  design voice and data communication systems, supervise installation of these systems, and provide maintenance and service after installation.

NGOs often require Telecom Specialists to install and maintain communication infrastructure in remote locations that do not yet receive voice or data or in disaster areas in which the communication system broke down. In both situations, locations are often also off the power grid and depend on alternative power sources. Extreme environmental conditions like heat, humidity, dust, and extreme rains and floods further aggravate the situation. Telecom Specialists must design systems to address these challenges and evaluate alternative connectivity solutions, like long distance WiFi, satellite communication or integration with cellular networks where available.

Responsibilities of Telecom Specialists include:

  • Designing voice and data communication systems
  • Procuring telecommunications equipment and/or services
  • Supervising installation and managing vendors
  • Monitoring communications equipment

Design Communication System
  • Gather data to identify requirements for the organization or a particular project
  • Define scope of work
  • Review network and connectivity options, topology, interdependencies and constraints
  • Research technical alternatives and analyze technical options.
  • Perform tower analysis regarding antennae placement
  • Prepare overall design and integration plan
  • Recommend selection of architecture, topology, hardware and software
